I'm not denying that he couldn't train or anything, but the fact that in the Boo arc when Gohan tried going SS he simply couldn't.

Also, we know his potential could've reset by the time BOG happened and it's possible his potential could've reset just enough for him to only access MSS.

It's not that Gohan can't go Super Saiyan, its that his entire Super Saiyan Form and potential has now been increased to its maximum possible level. I think you people are making the mistake in thinking Gohan lost his SSJ form and then years later got it back. He's always had it, when he was fighting Super Boo he was fighting as a Super Saiyan but in a different format since his entire potential has now been put into one point.

SSJ, SSJ2, SSJ3 any potential power that Gohan could've gotten in his life was increased beyond its final point by Elder Kaioshin. By the sheer definition of Elder Kaioshin's power, Gohan literally can't get any stronger by means of potential increase. While Gohan's power earned through training and stuff can decrease, his potential will always remain the same and Old Kaioshin has effectively made what we think of the SSJ forms as obsolete.

Quote:

Chapter: 496 (DBZ 302), P4.1-2
Gohan: “Ho-how can I turn into this mightiest of warriors!?”
Elder Kaioshin: “You transform into that Super whatever-it-is a lot, right? You’ll be fine if you just get the gist of that, and throw in a kiai.”
Gohan: “The gist of Super Saiyan…I-I got it…!”

Chapter: 496 (DBZ 302), P7.2-3
Context: after Gohan transforms into the ‘mightiest of warriors’
Goku: “It re-really is incredible…It’s super-duper…! Absolutely unbelievable…Your appearance has hardly changed…And you ain’t even a Super Saiyan…Yet you’ve been taken to su-such an extreme…”
Elder Kaioshin: “Hmph, transforming isn’t good. That Super whatever-its-called is the wrong way [of doing things]…”

Elder Kaioshin, as I said, has made the point of transformation for Gohan obsolete and unnecessary. You can think of it as a way of saying that all of Gohan's amplifications earned by his SSJ form and potential now resides in his natural base form.

Gohan apparently going Super Saiyan, literally doesn't make sense. It's a huge contradiction to Elder Kaioshin's power. Once more, Gohan didn't lose his SSJ powers, its just been put into a more proper setting and better use than it was before. Its pretty much the pinnacle of Gohan's SSJ powers that he can or will ever have. Any other gains would have to be made by sheer force of training.

After all you don't take MSSJ and stack SSJ on it.

I think Elder Kai made it abundantly clear that Gohan didn't have to go SSjin, not because he felt Gohan was superior to Boo already, but because it wouldn't make any difference.

I know that, that's what I've always said, that Ultimate is all SS power put into Base without any strain... I've always believed that.

I know it doesn't make sense that Gohan goes SS again... I'm just trying to come up with an explanation as to why.

Also, I know Gohan never lost SS, he just temporally lost the ability to go SS.

I believe what Elder Kaioshin wants to imply is that there is two different forms of Gohan. There's his natural happy "base" form and then there's his "Strongest of Warriors Form" Where all of his SSJ powers has been put into one point. Once the ritual is done, Gohan doesn't know how to attain this so called power until Elder Kaioshin tells him to get the "gist" of Super Saiyan.
